As a warm-up before the June festival week in Isola, the international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema continues its exploration and celebration of its 20th anniversary. Already on 10 May 2024, in cooperation with TAM-TAM, we are opening a retrospective exhibition of the festival’s posters from 2004 to the present day at the Figovec Poster Gallery in Ljubljana. From 22 May, an exhibition of visual memories of twenty years of unforgettable expeditions to the most cinematic Island of our sea will be on show at the Kinodvor gallery in Ljubljana. From 5 to 9 June, we will invite visitors to the festival in Isola to the Cabinet of Wonders, an exhibition of cinematographic memorabilia and related mischief at the Kino Otok venues: the Cultural Centre, the Art Cinema Odeon and perhaps elsewhere. What about our common future? For the third year running, we are the first film festival in Slovenia to follow the path of zero waste, as part of a holistic effort to reduce the harmful impact of our activities on the environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sea of films, poster exhibition of the Kino Otok – Isola Cinema Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Friday<\/strong>, 10 May<\/strong>, at 6 pm<\/strong>, in cooperation with TAM-TAM, we are opening an exhibition of posters from all 20 editions of the festival at the Figovec Poster Gallery<\/strong> in the centre of Ljubljana, next to the Slovenian Reformation Park<\/strong>. Since 2004, Kino Otok has been dedicated to developing film culture, but at the same time, with its annual graphic design, it also contributes to nurturing visual culture in public space.<\/p>\n

Over the years, the festival’s posters have been created by various visual communication designers, and have always been characterised by the use of illustration, diverse graphic elements related to film, seaside and summer motifs. It was only last year that photography (of the sea) found its place on the Kino Otok poster, while the festive cover for Kino Otoka’s 20th anniversary brings a collage of festival moments captured through a photographic lens.<\/p>\n

The authors of the festival posters are Metka Dari\u0161, Toma\u017e Perme (2004, 2005), Maja Rebov (2006-2013), Nina Vrhovec (2014-2021), Ur\u0161ka Ali\u010d (2022-2024).<\/p>\n

In 2017 and 2018, the festival posters by designer Nina Vrhovec<\/strong> (Multipraktik) were awarded the Brumen<\/strong> Prize, while the festival’s two overall images by the same designer were awarded the Brumen Prize for Excellence in Slovenian Design in 2019 and 2020, respectively.<\/p>\n

The placement of the exhibition of 20 years of Kino Otok posters in an open urban space is in keeping with the itinerant nature of the poster as a primary medium of visual communication. It will be on display until 6 June<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

20 years of the festival: following the path of film memories and friendships with exhibitions in Ljubljana and Izola<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Wednesday<\/strong>, 22 May<\/strong>, in the gallery of Ljubljana’s city cinema Kinodvor<\/strong>, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Kino Otok festival, which has been at home in both Izola and Ljubljana since its inception, we are opening an exhibition of a curated selection of visual memories of twenty years of unforgettable expeditions to the most cinematic Island of our sea. The exhibition, entitled See you on the Island!<\/strong>, will be on display until the end of the Otok in Ljubljana film programme, which will be screened at Kinodvor.<\/p>\n

From 5 to 9 June<\/strong>, we will invite visitors to the festival in Isola to the Cabinet of Wonders<\/strong>, an exhibition of cinematographic memorabilia and related mischief at the Kino Otok venues: the Cultural Centre, the Art Cinema Odeon and perhaps elsewhere. Photographs, videos, notes, memorabilia and other exhibits from the archives of the festival and its creators will be on display.<\/p>\n

Kino Otok is the first zero waste<\/em> film festival in Slovenia<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2022, Kino Otok became the first Slovenian film festival to embark on the zero waste<\/em> path. This does not mean that there is no waste at the festival, of course, but we are working together to ensure that there is as little as possible and that it is collected properly. We are supported in our efforts by Ecologists Without Borders<\/strong>, a national zero waste<\/em> organisation that guides municipalities, event organisers and tourism providers on waste prevention.<\/p>\n

On average, each event visitor generates more than 1 kg of waste per day. Last year, more than 5 000 people visited Kino Otok, which, on a global average, would mean more than 5 tonnes of waste at just one event. Last year, we managed to dispose of 98% of all waste in the correct containers, and each festival visitor generated on average only 50 grams of waste. This year, together with our partners and visitors, we will go one step further and take care of waste prevention as well as recycling.<\/p>\n

Adopting a zero waste<\/em> pledge is part of the festival’s overall efforts to reduce the environmental impact<\/strong> of our activities, which include promoting the use of public transport and train travel instead of air travel, reducing the print run of festival stationery, reusing items and equipment, and working with partners to provide eco-friendly and local offers.<\/p>\n
